Like most Mac Geeks, I spend my Monday huddled over my computer refreshing Engadget to find out what great things Uncle Steve and his merry band of designers had in store for us at WWDC. Turns out the rumors were true and Apple will be releasing a new iPhone 3Gs in the very near future (next week), and it’s going to sport some really nice upgrades.
For us photo nerds, the biggest feature is the new 3.0 megapixel camera with autofocus, white balance, and the ability to tap the screen for selective focus. Add a video camera to that list and you have the ideal camera phone—something I’ve pretty much laughed at since phone companies first started putting lenses into the backs of cell phones.
See, I never understood the point of having a camera in your phone. Why the heck would I want to take a blurry photo and waste precious memory on my phone? I never understood it. That all changed when I realized that camera phones make great digital notebooks. Rather than jot down a note on my Blackberry to remind me to buy a book that I saw at Barnes & Nobles, I could just photograph the cover and add it to my Amazon wish list.
The idea that I could actually take good pictures with a camera phone never crossed my mind until I saw the work that Chase Jarvis was doing with his photo-a-day portfolio. He was literally making art with a 2 megapixel phone. I had to have one.
But I waited for a bigger hard drive and a lower price point. I’m glad I waited.
The Apple iPhone now features a 32 GB hard drive, a speedy processor, and a thrifty price point at $299, making it not only the greatest camera phone, but also a hell of a value for any smart phone/video/music convergence device.
Now I just need to wait until November for my Verizon contract to expire.
