My Favorite Model (and Chuck)

A few years back, Allison and I photographed our amazing friends Chuck and Tara at an airstrip during a brutal heatwave. It was like 120 degrees on the tarmac and I just couldn’t drag the bride-to-be out of the air conditioned car to do test shots for 10 minutes (she would have melted instantly). Luckily I have the greatest wife and model in the world willing to brave treacherous heat stroke to help me get some awesome photos. Here’s an outtake from the day featuring Allison in all her glory and Chuck practicing to be a male watch model. Chuck is currently available for modeling gigs. You can view the full set here.

I just got back from Boston and am heading to Dallas tomorrow, but I wanted to get a few fun photos up on the blog. A few weeks back, I had the pleasure of photographing Kimberly and Andrew in one of my favorite cities for engagement photos—Jersey City. Jersey City just has a wonderful mix of urban, waterfront and park scenery that it’s impossible not to find a fun location to shoot at. Below are a few of my favorite photos from the afternoon, accompanied by some behind the scenes shots take by Kimberly’s lovely sister Kristin. I’m posting them so I can remind myself just how ridiculous I look while I’m shooting photos. I’ll have more from this engagement session in a few weeks.

Last week, Allison and I got our work out for the year climbing up this crazy dirt trail behind the Presby Iris Gardens called Mills Reservation. I hate to admit, but I lived in Montclair for close to seven years and I never heard of this beautiful little hideaway. Larissa and Anthony were a little apprehensive about doing an engagement shoot, but I promised them that they’d be in a good hands. This shot was taken at possibly the highest point in Montclair. We fought off massive mosquitoes, gnats, and evil trees, but the final shot was so worth it.

There’s really nothing I like more than spending an afternoon with a couple celebrating their love in an environment that doesn’t involve cake cutting, ring exchanges and vows—better known as the engagement session. I include it in every package because it gives me the opportunity to get to know the couple, learn how they react in front of a camera and gives them a chance to get use to my sense of humor. Seriously, it’s one of the few times before the wedding where the couple can be themselves and have professional photos created that are totally stress free and relaxed. Here are some of my favorites from the past year. Some of them haven’t even been blogged yet, but I couldn’t wait to post them.

Shelli & Michael {Central Park Engagement Photos}

We’re in the Summer groove now, and it is steaming hot on the East Coast. Next week, I’m going to be photographing Shelli and Michael at the Liberty House in Jersey City, so I thought it would be fun to post their engagement photos that we made before New York became a sweat box. The four of us (Allison did her usual awesome job telling me the best direction to point my lens) started out in NYC’s business district where we took advantage of some of the city’s grittier locales, including the famous fire station from Ghostbusters. I had no idea it really existed until we stumbled on it by accident. The day was capped off with a stroll through Central Park. It’s hard to imagine, but there are actually quiet areas in the park if you look hard enough. The day was an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to capture the couple’s wedding on digital film. You two are absolutely amazing people and it doesn’t hurt that you’re both beautiful too.

“We don’t want to do a boring old engagement shoot in a park with flowers and tall grass,” Chuck told me as we sat down to discuss his pending e-session. “I want to look awesome… I want the photos to look timeless… I want a plane.” Chuck and his lovely bride-to-be Tara got their wish. Many more shots from this shoot coming next week. Here’s a teaser shot. I also want to wish everyone a happy fourth of July. We’re heading to Brooklyn to celebrate Independence Day with friend and hopefully catch some fireworks.
