In the last two weeks, I’ve photographed two parties for the multimedia film experience TRIP. Last week, I got try out my new Canon 50mm 1.4 lens, which take some magnificent portrait shots. The 1.6x crop factor in my 40D makes the lens essentially an 80mm piece of glass allowing me to stand a decent distance from party goers to capture some great candid moments.
Last night was the final New York event for the film and the people running the show put on a major gala event at the Arena in Times Square. The place was covered in projection screens showcasing the film from every corner of the room. The biggest challenge was shooting a series of performers against a front projector showing the film and capturing both the film and the subjects in very low light without flash. I used my trusty Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 lens, hiked the ISO to 3200 and prayed for the best. Luckily the mood lighting was bright enough to get some very cool color saturated photos.
