My favorite engagement shoots are often the ones that we don’t have a plan for. The ones where we set off on a journey in a familiar neighborhood and hope it speaks to us in a new way. While I do my best to take advantage of everything around me, it helps when I have a couple that’s fun and truly in love to guide my way.
Case in point, Batya and Matt, a fraking hilarious couple that enjoy life to the fullest and are a pleasure to photograph and hang out with. We spent a lazy, late afternoon traipsing along the west side of Manhattan, messing around by the Hudson River Greenway and capturing those little moments that you often ignore when the world moves around you at the speed of light.
The crazy thing about New York is that every time I visit, I find something new. That’s a huge reason why I despise taking engagement photos in Central Park. In a city teeming with local parks, stunning architecture, off-the-beaten-path bars and hidden treasures, you can shoot there every single day and still find a new backdrop. Why stick to the same old tourist standbys when you can discover your own private studio?
That afternoon, we had the waterway and park between 70th and 77th streets all to ourselves to do with as we pleased. You wouldn’t even think that we were in Manhattan if I didn’t write it and that’s what I love about New York City. Well that, and my awesome couples.
