When a legendary sports guru tells you that he can get you access to a football stadium for his Rutgers New Brunswick engagement photos, you don’t ask questions. Especially if said access is a little on the gray side of the law. I met up with Caitlin and Ryan in the middle of a desolate stadium parking lot where we got over the awkward engagement session formalities pretty quickly. There was no time for that. As we hustled into the mammoth edifice a thousand photo ideas poured into my head. The goal was to get as many different images as we good in as few minutes as possible. The only thing I wasn’t expected was the sheer size of the stadium. Running up and down stairs to switch lenses and get from the end zone to the bleachers was simply exhausting for this terribly out of shape wedding photographer, but Caitlin and Ryan loved every minute of it (or they did a brilliant job faking it).
It’s easy to understand why these two chose Rutgers for their engagement session; the couple fell in love there well over a decade ago, while burning the midnight oil at the school newspaper, “The Daily Targum.” Caitlin and Ryan’s ideas for photos were definitely the non-traditional type (hallway with ugly lighting, in the sketchy staircase by the Pepsi machine, Grease Trucks), but I quickly realized that these were locations where their love blossomed and their journey truly began. With half of a Fat Bitch in each hand (cheesesteak with finger, mozzarella sticks French Fries. mayo, ketchup, lettuce and tomato), the two chowed down with grin from ear to ear. They say that it’s impossible to recreate the feelings you felt in your youth, but for one Spring afternoon, I think Caitlin and Ryan got pretty damn close.
